Introduction to modifying your BMW 335D F30 2012
If you are new to the 335d or enjoyed this car for a while then you will be either be settled or just getting used to the 308bhp from the twin turbo’d 3.0L straight six diesel N57 lump.
When it comes to improving the power of this BMW 3 Series, you are looking at a few simple options with this diesel engine : tuning box or ecu remap, neither will increase the top speed per se but you will be getting more power, torque and economy from both options. An engine remap at stage one will give you over 370hp and 725NM of torque, at £449 inc vat it is certainly the largest pound per horsepower gain you will get on the 335d. Stage two remaps alongside the required performance hardware will be taking the car to a figure of over 400hp! All alongside an extra 5 miles per gallon better off on economy. Here at MP-UK in Manchester, we offer both custom engine remaps using our 4 wheel drive dynamometer and we offer the range of Dinan tuning boxes which offer the benefit of being removed if you sell the car and sold on to recoup cash.
Wanting to go further into power gains for your BMW 335d will require performance tuning parts. An intercooler from Forge Motorsport will give an approximate gain of 10hp, also on offer is a swirl flap delete that will not only get your engine running sweet but cover you from potential issues with the flaps later down the line.
Now the 335d performance has been lifted from Munich spec, the handling can be matched to the now higher output from the 335d engine. A set of good quality lowering springs will adjust the stance of the vehicle so not only your 3 series looks good but it will feel more eager approaching a set of corners. Coilovers and anti roll bars will only further the capabilities of the 335d, especially if you like taking the car down the country lanes on a sunday morning.
For drivers not already equipped with the M Performance brakes on their 335d, then a simple upgrade to some heat treated discs from Tarox matched with some performance pads will offer an improvement on stopping power. If you have a bit more budget then from a pocket with £1000 in will get you into the territory of big brake kits ala to the m sport upgrades, offering larger disc sizes, more pistons in the caliper giving an unparalleled pedal feel and stopping power.
The 335d is very much a ‘Q’ look car out of the box, offering a subtle hint at its available power, some drivers like to keep this little inkling at their disposal where some prefer to show off their German car with some exterior styling modifications. AC Schnitzer offer some subtle tailpipes that improve the look of the stock exhaust; alongside the german styling gurus other products such as alloy wheels, mirror caps and spoilers you will be sure to be able to set your 335d aside from the others cruising the motorway.
An overlooked area of the 335d handling and suspension is its stock bushes, manufacturers manufacture the bushes today to be compliant for all users and at cost effectiveness. The standard bushes wear in between MOT periods leaving a hefty bill usually in regards to the labour required to replace these inexpensive rubber bushes. Upgrading to polyurethane bushes not only give a performance based handling improvement in that the control arms for example have a more compliant bush between them, but these poly bushes usually have a lifetime guarantee therefore once fitted they can be forgotten.
