The X3M/X4M intake setup from BMW although awkard at first sight, is a very well designed system in the given space available. The flow path from the filters to the turbo inlets is very direct and does not change direction as abruptly as the usual OEM airbox designs. So instead of a complete redesign we focused on improving the OEM airbox with less restrictive flow and improved temperature efficiency. We have developed replacement drop in filters made from non-woven mesh which have a much higher flow rate as compared to the stock paper filters. To help reduce inlet air temperatures and force air into the airbox we designed large front scoops which sit behind the grills. The carbon scoops channel air into the ducts and effectively effectively de-restrict the inlet side of the airbox. The final piece is the carbon airbox lid which although doesn’t add to the performance, it does allow for a more audible induction sound and gives the engine bay a much needed aesthetic improvement.
